Fastrak Champion Knight Ready For Showdown In Savannah At OSP
SAVANNAH, GA – The 2016 Fastrak Pro Late Model Southeast and Mid-Ohio Valley Champion Cla Knight of North Augusta, SC will be one of the top entrants at the $10,000-to-win 19th Annual Showdown In Savannah for Crate Late Models this Thursday through Saturday at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.
Knight is a driver that has come into his own in the second half of the 2016 season with wins and top five finishes in some of the biggest Crate Late Model Races in the Southeastern United States. Knight made Fastrak history this season by becoming the first driver to win both the Southeast Region and the Mid-Ohio Valley Region Championships in the same season.
“After winning the Rookie of the Year and placing fourth in points in two Regions last year, to back it up with Championships in both Regions made it a fun and satisfying season,” Knight said. “This season, I had more experience with a full notebook from the 2015 season to take back to tracks, we upgraded our equipment, and I made better decisions as a driver.”
Knight won four Fastrak Weekly Racing Series events in 2016, but he seemed to come into his own during the Labor Day Weekend three-race Fastrak East Coast Rumble. Knight opened the trio of races with a Regional win at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN, and then followed that up with his second win in three days at Wythe Raceway in Wytheville, VA.
In two trips to East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL, Knight finished fourth in the Alabama State Championship Race in October, and followed that up with a second-place finish in the National 100 in November. Knight has experience, and more importantly, success at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.
“I like Oglethorpe Speedway Park and I’ve had some good runs there in the past,” Knight said. “I’ve got a lot of top three finishes there and I finished second last year in the Showdown In Savannah. We run a different compound of tire at the Showdown than we run with Fastrak, so I’m looking forward to getting down there on Thursday to get everything dialed in.”
Knight will face some tough competition for the 19th Annual Showdown In Savannah. Top entrants will include World of Outlaw hot shoe Brandon Overton of Anderson, SC, who will be driving for former Showdown winning car owner Bobby Kay who had Tuck Trentham driving. Superman Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA will also be looking for the $10,000 top prize.
The defending Showdown In Savannah winner Cecil Eunice of Blackshear, GA will return to defend his title. Also entered is Kyle Bronson of Brandon, FL, Robert Diekemper of Bloomingdale, GA, Travis Pennington of Stapleton, GA, and Mark Whitener of Middleburg, FL.
Along with the Crate Late Models, the Super Stocks and the Super 4s will be in action for the 19th Annual Showdown In Savannah with each Division competing in a 50-lap $5,000-to-win main event. The Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks will each compete for 20 Laps and $1,500-to-win in their respective main events. The Amateur 4 Division will also be in action with a 10-lap main event each night.
The Crate Late Models are powered by economical Chevrolet Performance 604 Circle Track Engines that are built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications. Kelcar Motorsports will provide the personnel to scrutinize the Crate Engines and collect tire samples in the Tech Area during the post-race inspection.
The Showdown In Savannah gives race fans an opportunity to see big track racing on a dirt surface, as Oglethorpe Speedway Park is the last standing half-mile dirt track in South Georgia and North Florida. There have other dirt tracks in each area that have been half-mile in length, but they have either reduced in length or closed. Only OSP has stood the test of time as a half-mile race track.
The on track action begins on Thursday night, December 1 with an Open Practice Session. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with practice from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Pit passes are $20 for adults, $10 for children 12 and under, and Grandstand admission will be $5.
Friday night action will feature Qualifying and Heat Races as preliminary events for the big show. The Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks will run Heat and Feature Races on Friday night. Gates open at 5 p.m. with Hot Laps and Qualifying for Crate Late Models and Super Stocks will be at 6:15 p.m. Racing action is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Pit passes on Friday night will be $30 for Adults and $15 for children 12 and under. General Admission Grandstand tickets will be $15 for Adults, $13 for Seniors and Military, and $5 for children 12 and under.
Saturday night will see B-Main races and the big money feature events. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., with Hot Laps at 6:20 p.m. and Racing scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Pit passes are $40 for Adults and $20 for Children 12 and younger. The Grandstand ticket prices are $20 for Adults, $18 for Seniors and Military, and $5 for children 12 and under.
Oglethorpe Speedway Park is located Northwest of Savannah, GA at 200 Jesup Road, Pooler, GA 31322, or three miles east of I-95 at Exit 102 on U.S. Highway 80. Clanton Claims $10,000 Pay Day At The Showdown At Senoia
Submitted by Ted Austad

(November 13, 2016 - Senoia, GA) Shane Clanton from Zebulon ran flag to flag Saturday night to claim the $10,000 top prize at the inaugural running of the ‘Showdown at Senoia’ year end auto racing extravaganza at the 3/8ths mile bull ring in Senoia. Clanton jumped in front of polesitter Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN and then held off a late race scare provided by Winston’s Michael Page.
“It’s always good to win. It’s even better to win close to home,” said Clanton afterwards on the front stretch.
Shane Clanton |
The 2015 Craftsman Tools World of Outlaws Late Model Tour champion, Shane Clanton, used the high side of the slick racing gumbo clay to sneak past Owens. Then he slowly made his way back to the bottom increasing his lead through the middle part of the 60-lap main event.
Michael Page emerged as his strongest contender near the halfway mark and then began to pressure Clanton as the two began to work lapped traffic. Clanton went low on the slower traffic entering turn three on lap 52 which allowed Page to sneak past on the highside. But, that tease at the lead was short lived as Clanton charged past the lapped car while Page had to slow slightly giving Clanton the lead back. That close call was enough for Clanton to turn it up a notch and he pulled away through the final few laps to claim the victory.
Michael Page settled for second place ahead of Evans’ Brandon Overton in third. Kansas hot shoe Chase Junghans was fourth followed by polesitter Jimmy Owens. Short track dirt racing ace Scott Bloomquist finished in sixth place while Mississippi’s David Breazeale was seventh. Acworth’s TJ Reaid was eighth, Tennessee’s Riley Hickman ninth and the race’s hard-charger was Cartersville teenager Zach Leonhardi rounding out the first ten. Leonhardi started eighteenth after making the field with a win in the second consolation race.
Williams is ‘Lightning’ in NFS Box Stock win Garver, Hoffman, Olson also hit victory lane

LAKE CITY, Fla. (Nov. 12) – The
old adage, of course, is children should be seen and not heard.
Society has distanced itself from that, especially in the racing world
and to good results. Mack Williams is a prime example and also may be the feel
good story of the season at North Florida Speedway.
The 10-year old Hilliard, Fla. driver sped his Lightning McQueen look
alike Box Stock to the 12-lap feature win Saturday evening during his first NFS
visit of 2016. He has been competing at another local track.
“I was just trying to stay straight and weave in and out to pass the
others,” Williams said in Sunoco Fuels Victory Lane. “They were all just trying
to avoid the potholes and I just drove (over) them and I won.”

Richards Crowned Champion in WoO
Josh Richards 2016 WoO Champ
Billy Moyer Jr. named 2016 Rookie of the Year
CONCORD, N.C. – Nov. 1, 2016 – After Shane Clanton’s son, Gunnar, helped add the final sparkle to Josh Richards' No. 1 Valvoline/ Seubert Calf Ranches Rocket car, Richards knew it was his time to shine – for the fourth time. Clanton, the defending series champion, passed the torch to Richards Sunday night at the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series Night of Champions Banquet.
“I was the little kid playing in the dirt,” said Richards in front of his peers. “You just dream that someday, at the end of the day, you’re the guy at the top winning the championship. I never thought this season would be possible. It just means so much to me, to be able to do what I love to do. This is our fourth time, and it’s [still] overwhelming. It wouldn’t have been possible without everyone who put their faith and support in me.”
Richards’ dream season was a culmination of his consistent performances and the solid work ethic of his team. The Mark Richards Racing driver went home with some serious hardware: a trophy, ring, a Craftsman® toolbox, and a $100,000 check. He was last crowned champion in 2013.
But Richards wasn’t the only member of his team to earn recognition. Team owner and Rocket Chassis founder Mark Richards was honored with the Chassis Builder of the Year Award, and Crew Chief Danny White received the Integra Shocks Crew Chief of the Year Award.
“I don’t know if I really deserve it, but it’s neat,” said White, who joined the tour in 2011. “Rick Eckert took a big leap of faith with me [in 2011]. I sent him a resume, and he called me the next day saying, ‘Yeah, we’d like to try you out.’ He kept the faith in me and got me to where I am today. I think Mark [Richards] has more confidence in me than I have in me. That builds me up and lets me do my job, and I’m doing things I would have never dreamed of.”
Andy Durham, the owner of Durham Engines, took home the Engine Builder of the Year Award. Durham manufactured Richards’ power plants for the year, and as a token of his appreciation, Josh Richards gave the Craftsman toolbox to him so, “he can keep the hard work up.”
“Josh, what can I say,” Durham said. “You went to Florida, started winning and never stopped. I’m just very blessed to be a part of it."
In 39 starts, Richards and company compiled 18 wins, 31 top-five and 36 top-10 performances. The No. 1 team won a heat race in all but 10 shows, and recorded a fast time in nearly 31 percent of the season’s races. Moreover, Richards broke the series’ season wins and career wins records, 18 and 75 respectively.
“My crew back at the shop all dug in when we were a little behind last year,” said Mark Richards, remembering last year’s hiccups. “We were on a swing out West [last year], we came home from Cedar Lake [Speedway] – kind of a long trip because we didn’t run well – and I told the guys at the shop, ‘Hey, we’ve got to go to work.’ I knew we had to develop a new car [for this year]. It took some time to get that done, but we got it done. I can’t thank all the guys enough who made it happen.”
Billy Moyer Jr. took home Rookie of the Year honors. Moyer finished the season fifth in points, the highest among the series’ R.O.Y. honorees. With his father in attendance, Moyer took the stage to ultimately thank everyone who was involved.
“Congrats to the other rookies, Joey [Coulter] and Tyler [Erb],” Moyer said. “This is a tough deal. This really means something. I try to model my team after [Richards’]. I’ve been around my dad forever and know what it takes to win a championship, and they don’t halfway anything. That’s who I’d like to get to in this deal.
Moyer only hoped to be recognized as a true competitor in the series following his 2016 campaign; he recorded two wins, six top-five and 17 top-ten performances.
”For a while I was Billy Moyer’s son and got a lot of credit I didn’t deserve,” Moyer said. “To seal the deal on a couple [races] means a lot to me, and I think I finally gained respect that if I win a race, it’s not a shock.”

Chappell rides to NFS Late Model win Two Gaineys and Caudill also take checkers
Donnie Chappell
By Rob Lee
LAKE CITY, Fla. (Oct. 22) – As Donnie Chappell’s car roared to life at
the green flag, Late Model fans knew the other competitors had a challenge on
their hands.
Chappell’s SCS Electrical Contractors/Spivey and Sons Trucking/Chappell
Heating and Air machine sped from the pole and won the 20-lap Late Model
feature Saturday evening at North Florida Speedway.
“We knew we had something special tonight,” Chappell, of Jacksonville,
said in Victory Lane. “Track was a little rough, but still able to get some
great racing. Car ran good and we were able to use the top some and stay out
front.”
Rich Pratt had to start at the rear after a mechanical issue in his
heat. He methodically worked his way to the second spot. Nevin Gainey had an up
and down ride, but charged to third by the end. Stanton Mills, driving Jason
Fitzgerald’s car and Bo Allen rounded out the top five.
Allen, a fan favorite and former NFS track champion, challenged
Chappell early before fading a few spots and brought home the top five.
Georgia pilot Jay Johnson won his heat and was involved in an early
altercation in the feature. He recovered for sixth.
Multiple cautions slowed the race, but Chappell broke away on each
green flag to top the 18-car field.
“It was good to be out in the clean air and that helped the race car. I
can’t thank everyone enough that helps. We found what we needed.”
Gainey did double duty in the R.O.T. Construction/Schaeffer Oil/Snow
Brothers Race Cars house car for Late Models and Florida Outlaw EMod Series.
In the latter, he took advantage of the top line around the 3/8-mile
clay oval to run to the front of the FOES pack. He moved by Shane Taylor about
halfway through the 15-lap event and then checked out from the field even on
multiple restarts.
Devin Walker recovered from a restart at the tail to speed to the
runner up spot. David Markam, Dale Graham and Jason Garver completed the top
five.
Graham continues to top Garver in the series points.
Gainey’s dad, veteran Eddie Gainey, swept the Thunder Stocks show.
After winning his heat he paced all 15 laps of the feature and waited out
several cautions and one red flag.

(October 23, 2016 - Senoia, GA) After starting from the pole, Casey Roberts of Toccoa took home the victory in the Ultimate Super Late Model Series "Fall Brawl 40" at Senoia Raceway Saturday night. Roberts held off several challenges from Zebulon’s Shane Clanton to lead the race from flag to flag capturing his 19th career win on the Ultimate Super Late Model Series tour and second at the tough 3/8ths mile bull ring Senoia Raceway.
“I knew he was right there,” said Roberts in victory lane afterwards speaking of Clanton’s continuous pressure. “But, my wife was giving me great signals while we were running through traffic.”
Roberts took the lead out of the second turn of the initial lap and then held off Clanton’s attempt to slide underneath while the duo sliced and diced their way through lapped traffic. Kansas’ Chase Junghans and Cedartown’s Austin Smith battled through the middle part of the race before Junghans secured the third place position for good on lap 31. Alabama’s Tom Maddox rounded out the top five finishers by keeping his distance ahead of the race’s hard charger Clint ‘Cat Daddy’ Smith. The two-time Super Late Model track champion at Senoia Raceway climbed from his eleventh place starting position to finish in sixth place using the high line most of the night.
The ‘Fall Brawl 40’ served as a good warm-up for the travelling super late model drivers preparing for the “Showdown at Senoia” special on November 10, 11 and 12. The inaugural event will offer drivers the largest purse ever paid in track history including a $10,000 pay day for the winner of the super late model feature.

(Video) CHASE EDGE COLLECTS LARGEST CAREER PAYDAY FROM SHOWDOWN ON THE COAST AT GOLDEN ISLES SPEEDWAY
Chase Edge wins big at GIS

Waynesville, GA – LaFayette, Alabama racer Chase Edge showed out at the annual “Showdown on the Coast” at Golden Isles Speedway leading wire-to-wire and picking up the $5,000 winner’s check and his first NeSmith Dirt Late Model Touring Series victory of the 2016 regular season. Edge was overall fast qualifier and Heat Race 1 winner from Friday night’s preliminary action which put his Edge’s Gas Company/Penton Raceway/Jeff Dodgen Logging sponsored machine on the pole position for the 60-lap main event.
Edge and fellow front-row starter Russell Brown Jr. led the field to the green flag after a lengthy rain delay had pushed back start times at the south Georgia oval located just a short distance from the Atlantic Ocean. Edge would jump to the lead at the start of the race and set a blistering pace to keep his competition at bay behind him. Throughout the rest of the field, position swapping and hard racing was happening for virtually all positions. The hard racing was slowed for the first time at lap 16 when the #17 of Nevin Gainey caught the inside berm in turn 2 spinning his machine.

AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE MATTHEW DELAYS SHOWDOWN IN SAVANNAH TO DEC. 1-3
SAVANNAH, GA – The damage in the Savannah, GA area
left last weekend by Hurricane Matthew has forced yet another postponement of
the $10,000-to-win 19th Annual Showdown In Savannah for Crate Late
Models until December 1, 2 and 3.
Recovery efforts in the area are still underway, and there has not been
electricity, phones and internet at the track all week.
The
race was originally scheduled for last weekend, but Matthew’s arrival forced an
original postponement until October 20-22.
A last minute change in the path of the storm took it right into the
Southeast Georgia coastal area.
Track officials hope the date change to
December 1-3 will give the track, area fans and area competitors an opportunity
to fully recover from the storm. Track
officials also hope the date change will also give everyone more time to make
plans for the race without interfering with other race events in the area.
Along with the Crate Late Models, the
Super Stocks and the Super 4s will be in action for the 19th Annual
Showdown In Savannah with each Division competing in a 50-lap $5,000-to-win
main event. The Mini Stocks and Pure
Stocks will each compete for 20 Laps and $1,500-to-win in their respective main
events. The Amateur 4 Division will also
be in action with a 10-lap main event each night.

The Late Model Sportsman Division was one of the highlights of the meeting as the announcement concerning the birth of the new division under the Crate Racin' USA/NeSmith Racing banner has created much anticipation and "buzz" among competitors and speedways alike. The rules package for the division will focus on cost saving measures that will allow current and future racers a very affordable avenue to get into dirt short track racing affordably.
The class will feature Late Model style cars powered by the Chevrolet Performance 602 crate engines which have a proven reputation for durability, low maintenance, and most importantly affordability. The class will also implement other cost effective measures such as: a solid body shock rule with no adjustments to eliminate the costly shock packages that many of the upper level Late Model divisions are using; and a single tire utilization of the Hoosier Racing Tire Crate Racin' USA D21 tire with no grooving or siping among other measures that will be implemented to keep the class affordable.

(10-3-16) The weather was all around Volusia Speedway Park this past Saturday night, but never got close enough to stop another action filled night of racing as five divisions took to the "Worlds Fastest Half Mile" with the exciting Eagle Jet Top Gun Sprint Car Series headlining the event for the final time in 2016.
The first feature to hit the track saw the Mercedes Benz Limited Late Models take the green and it was Nevin Gainey who would put on a show on his way to the front early on. Gainey would have the lead before the second lap could be completed over Steve Shead and checked out from the field driving Louis Ledlow's Snow Brothers #00 to his sixth win of the 2016 season. Gainey has been traveling around the state of Florida the past few weeks and had not been to VSP in over a month, but showed no signs of rust in a convincing victory in an unfamiliar race car. Steve Shead would come home in the runner up spot followed by Sonny Thompson, John Westbrook, and Tom Smith rounded out the top five.
Next up saw the exciting Allen Plumbing Hobby Stocks take the track as it was Donnie Ashford and Trevor Gamble battling out on the half mile with the tight points battle in the mix as well between the two local drivers. Ashford, who has seven wins on the year had Gambles number early on and would stretch his lead just past the half way point. Gamble would try all he could to catch the #66 of Ashford, but could not get close enough to strike. With just a handful of laps remaining, Gamble would
catch a break as Ashford would slow and pull off the track with a blown engine handing the lead over to Gamble who would go on and win his third feature of 2016 and extend his points lead to 26 markers of Ashford. Jordan McMillon came home an impressive second followed by Rusty Young, Cheyenne Sullivan, and Ashford.

HURRICANE MATTHEW FORCES POSTPONEMENT OF SHOWDOWN IN SAVANNAH AT OSP UNTIL OCT. 20-22
By Roby Helm
SAVANNAH, GA – With Hurricane Matthew scheduled to
skirt the East Coast of Georgia this Friday and Saturday, Oglethorpe Speedway
Park officials have been forced to postpone the $10,000-to-win 19th
Annual Showdown In Savannah for Crate Late Models scheduled for this
weekend. The race has been rescheduled
for October 20, 21, and 22.
The
current weather forecast shows the Savannah, GA area with 100 percent chance of
torrential rain and sustained wind speeds of over 50 miles per hour. Fans and competitors alike from Florida,
Georgia, and the Carolinas are hunkering down, or heading for higher ground in
the days leading up to the storm’s arrival.
Along with the Crate Late Models, the
Super Stocks and the Super 4s will be in action for the 19th Annual
Showdown In Savannah with each Division competing in a 50-lap $5,000-to-win
main event. The Mini Stocks and Pure
Stocks will each compete for 20 Laps and $1,500-to-win in their respective main
events. The Amateur 4 Division will also
be in action with a 10-lap main event each night.
The Showdown In Savannah gives race fans
an opportunity to see big track racing on a dirt surface, as Oglethorpe
Speedway Park is the last standing half-mile dirt track in South Georgia and
North Florida. There have other dirt
tracks in each area that have been half-mile in length, but they have either
reduced in length or closed. Only OSP
has stood the test of time as a half-mile race track.
The on track action begins on Thursday
night, October 20 with an Open Practice Session. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with practice from
6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Pit passes are
$20 for adults, $10 for children 12 and under, and Grandstand admission will be
$5.
