Time For a Showdown

Have we all had our fill of the racing down time? Have we opened enough presents and ate enough food you have to roll yourself to the couch because its so much easier than walking? If you haven't you're one of the few because the feeling in the air is, "it's time already". Drivers and fans are needing that one drop of the drug we love called racing. It's a craving that we can't live without, it's a surge to our adrenalin glands that gives us the safest high there is. There hasn't been any racing for a few weeks now and believe me, that makes most of us have serious withdrawals. There is a light at the end of the dark tunnel. This weekend, in Waycross, Georgia, will be the Showdown in the Swamp. Racing, finally! Also, one of my favorite tracks.

I grew up in the racing world at this track. I actually spent my honeymoon at Waycross for a Hav-a-Tampa race (I know I'm old). Waycross has such a great history and some of the most devoted fans there are. The track has a new racing surface which was done when the new management took over and after watching the past few races there with the new clay, it is without a doubt the raciest surface I've ever seen at Waycross. They have resurfaced the track with what is called gumbo. It creates a more tacky surface so the cars can grip better and there isn't as much dirt and dust flying into the stands. It's one of the best for a race track that there is.

I can't wait to see the NLMS flying around the corners of this race track. The Ray Miller series will come into town and the drivers will lock horns for this annual Showdown in the Swamp. Drivers like Jason Fitzgerald, Brandon Dewitt, Mark Whitener, Cecil Eunice and Rhett Carter will be there to try out the new surface. Friday will kick off the weekend with a practice for all divisions and then Saturday will be the Showdown in the Swamp. Forty laps of side by side, mud slinging action to come out with one victor. Heart pounding, breath holding, non stop racing. If the late models don't have you on the edge of your seat the other divisions running will. Emods, limited late models, and pure stocks bring some of the best racing to Waycross Motor Speedway that I've seen.

One of the things I appreciate most in a track is it's ability to work with drivers, whether local or out of town. Waycross has created a $1000 to win pure stock race and to allow guys from out of town to be able to compete they have allowed for this race, after-market lowrise dual plane aluminum intakes with a 50 pound penalty. No air gap intakes. It gives fans an even greater chance to see some serious bare knuckle racing. This should allow more drivers to come and throw their hat into the ring. Fans should be prepared to see some seriously good racing. Along with the racing, there will be a bike race and bike give away for the kids. What kid doesn't want a new bike and who wouldn't want to take their new Christmas bike to the race track to show the others how awesome their new toy is? It should be a great weekend of racing and I can not wait to begin! I feel like an addict in serious withdrawals and will be getting my fix at the Showdown in the Swamp in Waycross, Georgia.
