Weekend Outlook: Golden Isles Speedway
In Waynesville, Ga. sits a 4/10 mile, d-shaped clay oval that I call home every year on the weekend of the Superbowl of Dirt. This year it was jam packed with drivers and fans alike who all came out to witness some of the best racing in south Georgia. This race is no joke and neither is this track. In October of last year Tommy Banks through his company Pro Dirt Series Inc. leased the track from Frankie Lloyd, but this wasn't his first time dealing with the track. He has been with GIS since the 1980's and he is extremely proud of his track and facilities, which he should be. They are always in order, clean, thank heavens air-conditioned , and ready for racing. It's always family-friendly and Mr. Banks lets his guys race and have a good time doing it which always brings the fans and drivers back.
I like to say GIS and Waycross Motor Speedway are sister tracks to each other. With the owners constantly talking, not scheduling against each other, keeping the payouts the same, and working together, it's no question as to why I would think that. I think it's a great idea anytime tracks work together, it means they are only caring about what fans and drivers want and that makes me happy. GIS has seen a facelift and by that I mean they took the old track and made it 90 feet wider all the way around which produces better racing by keeping drivers off of each other so there's fewer wrecks and better racing. It has given some exciting 3 wide racing for fans to stand wide-eyed asking themselves how the driver just did that without wrecking. The surface consist of excellent clay and doesn't have a lot of sand to eat up the tires. On the track isn't the only place there's plenty of room. Outside the track there's what seems enough room for the state of Georgia to live in, with R.V. hookups and camping grounds.
The season has been going according to plan with great car counts and fan turnout. The last race saw some excellent racing with previous winners Donnie Chappell, Kyle Chappell, Scott Crews and Kyle Livingood making excellent shows. The Limited Sportsman had 30 cars show up last time with every one of them starting. Mind you, this was a regular show, how amazing is that?! This weekend GIS will be running a regular show which we'll be at and I have no doubt will create some extraordinary racing. GIS runs classes of Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Superstreet, and Pure Stock. Coming up on May 19th they will host the NLMSS with a 40 lap, $3000 to win feature. There is sure to be lots of 3 wide, side by side racing and more fans yelling for their favorite driver this weekend and the 19th. If you need more information about the track you can click to go to their website here. Hope to see you there!
