Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Makes Three Race Swing This Weekend

WAYCROSS, GA (June 18, 2013) – Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will make a three race swing this weekend, competing in three different states. With stops in Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia, all three LOLMDS events this weekend will include Hot-Laps, RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, B- Mains and a 50-Lap feature event paying $10,000 to win and $800 to start. Thursday night, June 20th the series will roll into Swainsboro, GA and compete at the Paul Purvis promoted Swainsboro Raceway. The Aarons Crate Late Models will run as a support class with the LOLMDS at Swainsboro Raceway. Then on Friday night, June 21st the series will compete at the Lennie Bluff promoted Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC for the 15th Annual Gassy Smith Memorial. Support classes at Cherokee Speedway include: Crate Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Young Guns, Crate Sportsman and Stock 4. Then on Saturday night, June 22nd the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will roll into the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and compete at the Fred Brown promoted Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, VA for the “Blue Ridge 50”. Support classes at Wythe Raceway include: Modifieds, U-Cars, Super Street, Mini Stocks and U-Cars 2’s.
The last time the LOLMDS visited Swainsboro Raceway, regional hot shoe Casey Roberts of Toccoa, GA won the event in 2009, beating the series stars in front of a huge crowd. Steve Francis of Ashland KY won the 2012 Grassy Smith Memorial at Cherokee Speedway. This annual event is in honor of the late Clarence "Grassy" Smith, who is known throughout the racing industry for his contributions to motorsports. Grassy Smith is the father of Hall of Fame Racer Freddy Smith of Seymour, TN and grandfather of racer and car builder Jeff Smith of Dallas, NC. John Blankenship of Williamson, WV won last year’s exciting “Blue Ridge 50” from the 14th starting position at Wythe Raceway. Blankenship is the hottest driver on the series in 2013, winning two out of the past four sanctioned events and moving into 2nd place in the series national championship points standings. Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN will lead the stars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series into this weekend’s three race swing. Owens will again be displaying the Keyser Manufacturing Day-Glo-Orange spoiler as the series point leader while holding a slim 120 point lead over John Blankenship of Williamson, WV in the series championship points standings. Billy Moyer Jr. of Batesville, AR leads the JRi Shocks Rookie of the Year – Presented by Dunn-Benson Ford points standings.
