Wild Night At Waycross

Waycross Motor Speedway saw it's fair share of excitement last night with wild wrecks and even wilder finishes. The NLMSS was in full swing with a total of 23 cars showing up for the night. Brandon Dewitt, of Barney, Ga. had the fastest time in qualifying with a 16.676 seconds edging out the second fastest qualifier of Donnie Chappell who had a time of 17.353 seconds.

NASCAR Racing On Saturday Night Is Just Wrong (All Linked Up)

Here I sit on a Sunday afternoon bored to deathWhy?  Well, to me, there is no good reason.  Usually, on Sunday afternoon I can be watching or at least be listening to a NASCAR race as I complete working on videos or photos I've taken at a local short track.  For the second time this month, that is not the case.  This stinks to high heaven. Why oh why does NASCAR have to race on Saturday night?

Weekend Outlook: Watermelon Capital Speedway

Where in Georgia can you go to a track the locals affectionately call "The Melon"? Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Georgia of course. Last weekend was supposed to be a big weekend for WCS but Mother Nature had other ideas. So, all events have been moved to this Saturday and it's looking to be a beautiful weekend for it. Thank you Mother Nature. The track will be running Bandolero, Go Karts, Legends, Enduro, Pure Stock, Mini Stock, Pro Challenge Series, and Outlaw Late Models. Phew! That is what I call a list. Lots of classes which means lots of really great racing and something for everyone. Donnie Jones, the track promoter, has so much planned for the track I can hardly keep up! I could tell keeping things exciting and interesting at WCS is a top priority to him.

Weekend Outlook: Waycross Motor Speedway

This Saturday night the National Late Model Series will be rolling into Waycross Motor Speedway for their first stop of the year there. The NLMSS has been visiting Waycross since their inception, with Waycross carrying a couple of races a year. I called race director Chad Starling to get more info about this weekend's race schedule. He was polite, and very helpful in any questions I had. For over 60 years, which is forever in track years, the track was oil-based making it look almost like asphalt. It was a mixture of peanut oil, tar and clay. The owners decided to change the track by hauling in over 500 dump truck loads of red Georgia clay. During the past off season they shortened the track up and brought in turns 3 and 4. This has created some exceptionally good racing for Waycross and has helped them see an increase in car count and fan attendance.
With the change in track surface it has helped the drivers save tires which can make the cost of racing in this economy a heavy burden. A driver can drive the track on a Saturday night and still have some tire left. This should help make this weekend's car count be above their average amount. There is usually an average field of 24 but this weekend it looks to be around 30. With a 50 lap feature and $3,000 to win feature, who wouldn't want to be part of that? I'll drive a tricycle to win $3,000 but I don't think it'll meet NLMSS rules which by the way all late models at Waycross run for their regular weekly races and can be found here.

Weekend Outlook: Albany Motor Speedway

Albany  Motor Speedway is set to have a big race weekend with the Nesmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division coming to town. Both Friday and Saturday are set to be full of excitement. I wanted to get a more in depth look at everything that is going to be happening at AMS so I called race director, Ben Sumner Jr., to get an idea.

Random Thoughts: Big Race Weekend In Albany & Reopening Of Needmore Speedway

If you haven't heard about the goings on over in Albany this weekend, you need to traipse on over to the Albany Motor Speedway's website and check it out. The Nesmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will be in town and I understand that close to 50 of those late models or more may be participating. Wow, I think that will be a sight to see. That would make for a carnival atmosphere in and of itself but I understand that Trista Jo Atkinson has convinced Ben Sumner and Ronnie Bowden to both take their turns in a dunking booth. I wonder which drivers will pay top dollar to give those guys a bath?  It is all in good fun and for a good cause as it will benefit the American Cancer Society. Trista has other activities planned for the children as well. Learn about these and other things such as which classes will have increased purses this weekend by clicking here and going to the AMS website.

Deep Dixie Racing: Input Needed

Carolyn and Leo Johnson, along with myself, are the ones who came up with the idea to start Deep Dixie Racing.  All three of us love stock car racing and wanted to do what we could to help recognize the people involved in the sport and at the same time, promote it to those who are not.  We hope that what you see now on our site is just the beginning of something which will grow and help make others aware of the exciting, family-friendly sport that stock car racing has become.
