Speedfest 2013 Had A Little NASCAR Flavor To It

Kyle Benjamin poses with a fan.
This was the second year that Speedfest has been held at the Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Georgia.  South Georgia welcomed fans and drivers alike with very agreeable weather, mostly sunny skies with the temperature in the upper 60s.  That is fairly warm for this time of year.  That may not be as surprising as how hot some of the drivers seemed to get as daytime turned to night.

North Florida Speedway Heats Up This Weekend

This weekend begins a three straight weekend shot at North Florida Speedway. Friday begins the festivities with heat races and features being ran in limited modifieds and box stock. Saturday will be the big money races and it looks like this weekend will be bringing many different names from all different states. The track owner Phil Guadagno has been hard at preparing his track for the three weekend spectacular by working on the race track by widening it and putting in new grandstands for the fans in general admission and stands around the track for fans in the pits.
The track is sure to be packed for all three weekends and the owners will be well prepared. Next weekend will be extremely special since Nascar driver Kenny Wallace will be racing at North Florida Speedway. He'll be driving in one of the UMP modified cars. One of the most personable people in NASCAR his appearance is sure to make many fans happy. The third and final weekend will be the big finaly. Super late models will be roaring in to take home a $5000 paycheck and these guys are no joke.
With all the hard work and sweat the owners have put into this track during the off season fans should be happy with the end results and drivers should be happy with a new track just waiting for them to come run on. The schedule has had a lot of thought and planning put into it and for those of us who have had serious withdrawals from racing's offseason this is like finally letting a long held breath out. Racing, how we have all missed you and to North Florida Speedway I say "YES!". You have returned our passion to us to start our brand new 2013 season. We can all now release that breath of relief together. Gentlemen start your engines.

Larry Fleeman Memorial Scheduled In March At Gresham

Submitted by Sheena Elliott

Jefferson, GA (January, 24, 2013) – Gresham Motorsports Park is at it again!  With another race season ahead, GMP has great things in store for fans and competitors!  The season will kick off on March 30, 2013 with the Larry Fleeman Memorial Race when Mini Stocks, Renegades, Sportsman, Trucks, Outlaw Late Models and Pro Late Models return to GMP.

This race event was originally designated to be a memorial race event.  The passing of Beau Slocumb titled GMP’s first and second memorial race.  GMP felt that the life of Larry Fleeman, an honorable partner and loyal friend of GMP and the racing community, should be remembered and recognized.  Because this race was not designated for one particular driver or person, the memorial race will continue to remember and honor those that have passed that were loved by all in the racing community and the name of the race might stay the same for a couple of years or it might change from year to year.

Bubba Pollard Hopes to Hit the Mark After SpeedFest Near-Misses

Submitted by Glenn Luckett

Southern Star Hungry For The 2013 Edition at Watermelon Capital
Concord, NC (January 17, 2013) - Senoia, Georgia racer Bubba Pollard has accomplished just about everything there is to accomplish in Super Late Model and Pro Late Model racing in Southeastern United States. Name a marquee race or a race track in any state south of the State of Kentucky and chances are Pollard has competed at and has won at one time or another.

Very few signature events have eluded the 25-year-old over the years. One of those can be potentially checked off the list January 26 and 27 - SpeedFest.

Pollard will get two opportunities to rectify his SpeedFest shutout at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Georgia in SpeedFest 2013. Pollard will be competing in both the ARCA/CRA Super Series sanctioned 200-lap headliner as well as the 100-lap main for the companion JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by Chevrolet Performance.

Ellisville Speedway: The Return of Asphalt

Ellisville Speedway is located in Ellisville, Fl. about 10 miles south of Lake City. It's a half mile asphalt race track that had laid dormant until it was leased by Robert Ford Sr. from the owner of New Smyrna Speedway, Robert Heart. It had been closed for most of last season and opened back up in September 2012. This Saturday will be the tenth race since it's reopening. Robert Sr. has a history with the track being a driver at the track in the 90's. He drove a street stock with the number 66. Following in his footsteps, Robert Ford Jr. raced there also until it closed down.

Speedfest 2013 Entries

(Click on the flyer to make it larger.)

The more I look at the entry list of who is coming to the Melon next weekend, the more excited I get.  Lot's of next generation drivers with NASCAR pedigrees are on there and guess who is going to be on hand to sign autographs? That's right, their dads. How often do race fans in South Georgia have the opportunity to interact with some of their heroes like this?  Not very dang often from what I have seen.  Last year was the first time that the Watermelon Capital Speedway hosted Speedfest.  It was a blast and all the fans got to see some exciting racing.  You can expect the same or even better this year. I encourage you to go ahead and get your tickets because they are going fast.  I know you don't want to be the one that somebody comes up to the next day and says "Boy, you should have been there last night!" Check out the information the Melon has posted on their Facebook page:

Still undecided about attending SpeedFest 2013? Need some help making the final decision?

Videos: Kart Racing At Valdosta Motor Speedway

This time of the year, there is not an awful lot going on in the stock car racing world. In fact, just about every day, I see posts in social media where people are ready to get back to racing.  Well, let me tell you, there may not be an awful lot of racing going on in stock cars this time of year but there sure is some action going on in kart racing.  I had the opportunity to observe some of that action down at Valdosta Motor Speedway this past weekend.  It was good stuff, let me tell you.  What really surprised me was that I looked around and saw plenty of the same people I run into at stock car tracks all the time. I'm talking about drivers and fans.  Anyway, I have already completed a couple of videos from those races. In the first one, I just recorded some of the sights and sounds at the track.  The second video is the main feature which was run this past Saturday night.  I think it paid something like $1500 to the winner.  Other videos will be posted as they are completed.

Videos: Maine Wins Both Nights And The Bonus For A $3,200 Weekend At Needmore

SUNDAY FEATURES
VIDEO CREW:  RYAN WILLIAMS , GREG KEIGANS, DALE HALL, AND CAROLYN JOHNSON

SUPERSTREET: MICHAEL FORD
ENDURO:          RYAN HEMBREE
SKEETER:          MARTIN SAPP
MINI STOCK    TYLER SUMMERLIN

Driver of the Year Nominee: Ronnie Lee Newsome

Ronnie is the youngest driver on our list but what he lacks in the years of driving the other drivers have he makes up for in skill and success at such a young age. Running at tracks like Needmore, Golden Isles, and Douglas Motorsports Park he has shown serious aptitude and cunning in his sport. He had 7 wins at Needmore Speedway this year with 5 of them consecutive wins. Ronnie ran 16 races this year and only finished out of the top 3, three times.

Driver of the Year Nominee: Mark Whitener

I recently had an article up about Mark Whitener and the only thing I can say about his season is "whoa". He started the season out by breaking his back in an accident at North Florida Speedway and came back to win 14 features and 15 second place finishes and two separate championships in the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series and the Bubba Raceway Park Championship.

Driver of the Year Nominee: Roger Mckenzie

Roger Mckenzie is the second driver nominee in our Driver of the Year running. The Swainsboro, Ga. native has a driven his #733 pure stock to 13 wins this season. He raced at Swainsboro, 441 Speedway, and Savannah. Roger has 12 wins at Swainsboro this year and one at 441 Speedway. Out of those 13 wins he ran a 7 win streak at Swainsboro. He also drove a mini stock this year and won a race at Swainsboro and a superstreet car and won 2 races in that division too. Roger ended his season with the 2012 points championship at Swainsboro.  It looks like whatever he puts himself in he can drive to the front and be dominant.

Driver of the Year Nominee: Jimmy Sharpe Jr.

The beginning of the year started really great for this very popular Soperton, Ga. driver. He got the first win of the year at Dublin's 441 Speedway for their first race of the year. I think it's every driver's hope to win the first race of the season for a hot start right out of the gate. Along with driving at 441 Speedway, Jimmy drove at East Alabama Speedway, Cochran Speedway, North Florida Speedway, Screven and Gordon Park.
