Bedenbaugh And Crews Take Winternationals Wins At NFS

Lake City Fl. Adam Bedenbaugh started his 2013 season in pursuit of his fourth straight championship in style with a green to checkers run in the Late Model feature. David Crews Jr took the Open Wheel Modified win with Eddie Lake taking the Pure Stock checkers. In Street Stock action Grady Christian was declared the winner after first place finisher Richie Stephens failed post race tech inspection. Alvin Carter made his first NFS appearance a winning one in Sportsman. John Windham took two feature wins in Box Stock and Dave Wansley won Friday night's Limited Modified feature event.
The first feature to hit the speedway Saturday night was the Sportsman division. After the first attemt at a start was halted after contact between Cory Howard and Jody Turner the field got the race underway with Brian Smith jumping out to the lead. After one lap was completed the yellow appeared as Cory Howard slowed with body damage to the front of the 4H. When the field returned to green Alvin Carter made his way to the front on lap two relagating Smith to second. Four cautions between laps eleven and fifteen for minor spins and flat tires for the competition were the only thing to slow Carter on his way to victory. This was the Blacksheer Ga. drivers first appearance at NFS.

Up next were the Late Models with heat race winners Adam Bedenbaugh and Mark Whitener on the front row. At the drop of the green Bedenbaugh would jump to the early lead with Whitener in pursuit. On lap four Whitener was able to get alongside the leader but Bedenbaugh was able to turn back the challenge. While Bedenbaugh would work on widening his lead Whitener would soon have his hands full with Jason Fitzgerald trying to take the runner up spot. The lead trio would find themselves having to contend with lapped traffic which would provide several anxious moments for all three drivers. The only caution would come on lap twenty two as Bedenbaugh would find himself tangling with lapped traffic. When the race resumed the three time defending champion would finish his winning drive over Whitener and Fitzgerald.

Street Stocks would line up for their feature with a field of twenty three cars filled with some heavy hitters. Grady Christian would grab the lead at the start but the first of eight cautions would appear on lap one for a three car tangle that would collect Kevin Durden,Lee Newsome and Brian Morgan. Christian would hold the lead until Richie Stephens would move to the top spot on lap three. While Stephens would survive several more caution periods to be the first to the checkered flag he would not be as fortunate in post race tech inspection. With Stephens suffering a dq Christian would be named official race winner over Tim Powers and Brian Morgan who rallied from the lap one skirmish to finish third in the official results.

The Open Wheel Modified feature would see 2011 mod champion David Crews Jr. storm to the lead he would never surrender. The first of two cautions would wave on lap ten for a spin in turn one by Jamie Carter. Two laps later the yellow would come out for a turn two incident between Scott Mooers and a top three running Donnie Hall. These would prove to be the only obstacles for Crews as he would lead the field to the finish over Ronnie Chance and Justin Galbreath. In victory lane Crews would also state that he had no oil pressure when he fired the car up for Friday nights practice and an all night and day unplanned motor work would pay off for the winner. In a special touch the front of the winners car has a tribute to former competitor Johny Mullner who was lost to cancer last year.

The Pure Stocks would start their feature twenty four cars strong with Ray Wheeler grabbing the early lead over pole sitter Darrell Roberts. One lap would be complete before the caution flag would wave for debris on the frontstretch. Yellow would appear again on lap two for a spin by Clay McRae in turn four. On the restart a turn one incident would send Kevin Underwood to the pits with a flat tire. Three more cautions would appear between laps five and fourteen. On lap seventeen Eddie Lake would power past Wheeler for the race lead. Lake would hold on and take his second big money race in a row after taking the 2012 season ending Turkey Trot win.

Saturday night's Box Stock feature turned into a two car car battle with 2012 Champion John Windham and Tony Laporta fighting for the top spot. While Windham would go on to victory Patrick Alvino would use a late race pass to claim second over Laporta.

Friday night action saw David Wansley win the Limited Mod feature over rookie Bud Chancey with Jimmy Peele claiming third. Friday's Box Stock feature had John Windham winning over Patrick Alvino and Windal Clark.

Racing resumes this Friday February 1st with UMP Open Wheel Modifieds taking center stage with $1000 to win Friday night.
