(September 17, 2016) - The silence told the tale, but left Garrett Lloyd wanting more. The last time out was the first time with the Jacksonville, Fla. driver's new Limited Late Model ride. It was dominant until he shut it down due to mechanical problems with a huge feature lead. Saturday evening was a complete 180. The car was dominant again and this time stayed together as Lloyd won the Super 5 Challenge feature at Golden Isles Speedway. Lloyd picked up $2,000 for the victory over a stout field of Limiteds. Earlier in the season he took an EMod SC5 win.
The Tom Kelly Construction/P&G Land Clearing machine also was wheeled to fast time and the only competitor in the 16 second bracket. Previous winner Ryan Carter came next. SC5 series leader Scott Waters, Cecil Eunice and Lonnie Waters rounded out the top five.
Bud Chancey made it two straight EMod SC5 wins and $1,500 checks. The Yulee, Fla. native won the 20-lap finale, holding off Frankie Lloyd, Trey Pearson, Nick Kirkus and Randy Gainey. Chancey took over the SC5 series lead outright as former co-leader Chase Collins settled for a 14th place finish.
Brian Wooten continued the magical season with another NeSmith Performance Street Stock SC5 feature win and the $2,000 that went with it. The Brunswick, Ga. ace had already clinched the regular season track championship. This victory wrapped up the SC5 Series title as well. Donnie Ashford, fast qualifier Shaun Washam, Chris Keller and Robert Hicks followed in the next to last tune up before the NPSS World Championship at GIS October 14-15
Tom Smith picked up Barry Boatright's checkered flag for the first ever C Class Late Model win at GIS. Smith topped a 10-car field. Other winners were Billy Ammons (Enduro) and Chris Keller (Super Street). Ammons drew closer to point leader and eighth place finishing Johnny Barker with one point race left. Defending track champion Keller extended his advantage over third place finisher Paul Jones heading into the final point race.
That final track point race will be Saturday Oct. 1. The Super Challenge 5 Series wraps up with EMods and GIS Late Models. The Late Model show will be co-sanctioned with the I-95 Toyota Challenge Series and the winner leaves with $3,000. The EMod winner will pick up $1,500. Other classes also will be in action to crown track champions for 2016. Hot laps are set for 7 p.m. with racing to follow.
