LAKE CITY, Fla. (Sept. 24) – The gigantic trophy on the hood towered over those gathered in Victory Lane....
Memories flowed. Hugs, high fives and handshakes took over after a grueling 90-lap encounter.
The driver at the center of the celebration smiled, took it all in and knew it was more than winning the race.
David Showers, Sr. became the fourth different winner of the annual Benny Corbin Memorial Thunder Stock race Saturday evening at North Floriday Speedway.
Showers took the lead from his son David, Jr. on Lap 44 and fended off challenges from Shane Williams and Kevin Durden to take home the $5,000 top prize plus a race hauler full of contingencies from the 3/8-mile, clay oval.
“I tell you right now that was fun,” Showers, Sr. said. “Me and Shane was up there battling that thing, got into each other a little bit and that was a racing deal. But that was a lot of fun.”
Kevin Durden, Scotty Kay, Jr., Dustin Turnage and Bubba Durbin rounded out the top five. Dylan Hilliard, Tim Powers, Dale Graham , Allen Peacock and Darrell Roberts followed.
Showers, Jr. jumped from the front row and was untouched for the opening circuits. Williams and Graham trailed early. The first caution was not until Lap 14 when Mike Eubanks stopped with a flat tire.

During cautions Showers, Jr.’s ride had visible overheating issues, including having tape removed from the plastic nose by track officials.
The initial 46 laps had five yellows for 18 of those laps as caution laps counted the first half of the race.
Lap 44 was the final for Showers, Jr. as he pulled to a stop on Turn 4 to bring out the fifth yellow.
By that time, Showers, Sr. and his Showers Chassis/River Rat R/C Track Monte Carlo had recovered from a first lap incident to the runner up spot. He was one of only six different drivers in the top five to that point.
Showers, Sr. went off third, but tangled with sixth starting Dalton Strehle on the opening lap, falling to eighth. Then the veteran driver pulled the trigger on strategy.
“I kind of got in there with Dalton Strehle right off the bat and went backwards. I was like, just hang out right there because you got to be there at the end before you win one of these things.”
When the green flew on Lap 47 Showers, Sr. led Williams, Strehle, Turnage and Peacock. Two laps later he was the Roberts Performance Masters leader at halfway
Except for a crossover move by Williams to lead Lap 72 at the line, the St. Augustine ace crossed back on the next turn and paced the remaining 18 laps. The BCM was shortened to 90 laps from the intended 98 due to time limit. The cautions and the racing surface allowed the top runners to stay nearby.
“The race track was really nice to race on,” the winner said. ‘It wasn’t blistering fast so it kept everybody close.’
Williams was out of the top two only for one lap until dropping out following a fierce battle with Kevin Durden for second. The new Dave’s Towing/Big Frog Motorsports/Augie Buttram Monte Carlo was credited with 13th after bringing out the 15th and final caution on Lap 85.
Durden’s Computa Tune Complete Automotive/Braswell Auto Service/G&A Logging Camaro searched for a bite around Showers in the final five circuit shootout, but settled for second after starting 12th.
Eubanks recovered and took the O’Reilly Auto Parts Hard Charger Award.
Durbin’s ride was back and forth, pitting twice, but never losing a lap before his top five finish.
The three previous BCM winners all were in the field at least by provisional. Mike Tovet, the 2014 winner, raced his way in with a heat victory and was the highest finisher in 15th.
A total of 56 Thunder Stocks signed in.
Showers proved to be a great fit to keep the streak of different BCM winners alive, sharing memories.
“I got to thank Kent (Corbin) for putting this deal on for his dad. His dad was one hell of a man. I knew him for a long time and I greatly appreciate it. (Benny’s) the reason we’re having this race and his legacy lives on.”
“My dad would be so absolutely proud of you,” Kent Corbin said presenting the trophy.
