Weekend Outlook: Smokey Harris Speedway

                         14 May 2011_24
Last weekend Deep Dixie Racing expanded our borders and went south, but this Friday we'll be expanding west to Alabama. More specifically, Haleburg, the home of Smokey Harris Speedway. It's a track with a rich history that started out as the Chattahoochee Valley Speedway and was opened in 1967 by Arthur Harris. Mr. Harris kept it open for 7 seasons then it was closed for 30 years until it was leased in 2008 and the name changed to Chattahoochee Valley Motor Speedway. In 2010 the grandaughter of the original owner, Renee and her husband Joe, reopened the track but Joe changed the name of the track to Smokey Harris to name it after her grandpa. Smokey being his nickname.

The race track is a 3/8 mile clay oval with 18 degree banking and has just had turn 2 widened to allow the drivers to swing higher in the turn. The track surface is good quality letting drivers race multiple races on the same tires. The race track runs on Friday nights and has just became a sanctioned Nesmith Chevrolet Series track. The plan is to run opposite weekends of local Albany Motor Speedway to allow both tracks to run the series regulars at each track. It helps with overall costs for late models to become sanctioned by Nesmith and brings in big crowds.

Classes that run at Smokey Harris are, Bandits, Vintage, Bomber, which are like a pure stock class here, Sportsman, Stocker, which would be like an Enduro, and open wheel modifieds. Russell Welch, the number 55 sportsman and crate late model driver is a long time driver who is a consistent top 5 finisher. Leb Morris, the number 15 open wheel modified driver is an aggressive driver but always puts on a show for the fans and is one to contend with. The bomber division has a fierce battle between regulars #2 Brian Hansford, #23 Devin Danner, #66 Skeeter Redmon, and #7 Caleb Knight. It's tough competition to just come in and beat these guys.

The bomber division will have a special race coming up on June 15th called the Jeremy Danner Memorial Race which will race money for the local Baptist Children's Home. It will be a 35 lap feature with a $700 to win payout.

This Friday will be a regular show with racing in all divisions and more information can be found at their website. Hot laps will start at 7 central time which for me means having to remember I'm not in the same time zone but then again I can't keep up with the time here. No matter what the clock says though, it's always racing time in the south. See you there!
